Our table that day - flavours, smiles, and lots of love.

By Shraddha

Last December, I was on a solo trip to Kerala when I made a short stop in Alappuzha. I went there with another solo female traveler I had met along the way… someone who quickly became a good friend.

We visited Hotel Brothers in Alappuzha for brunch after a recommendation, and little did we know we were about to experience one of the warmest meals of our trip.

The place has an old school charm… nothing flashy, but incredibly clean and well maintained. The walls are filled with photographs of South Indian celebrities who’ve dined there over the years. It felt like a quiet hall of fame, where pride wasn’t shouted but framed lovingly.

We settled in and ordered a bunch of items from soft idiyappam topped with coconut to flavourful kadala curry (Chana Masala), crispy papad, boiled egg, and sweet Puttu… the food was full of flavor, homely, and comforting. They served jeera water, which felt like the perfect touch. When the bill arrived, we were genuinely surprised. It was so affordable that we both looked at each other in disbelief… it was unbelievably affordable.

We walked over to the reception and told the man there,

“We absolutely loved the food and it was so delicious! Is this your place?”

He smiled and replied,

“Yes, it is.”

I said,

“I have a small suggestion, if that’s okay.”

“Please, go ahead,” he said warmly.

“You should consider increasing your prices. Honestly, the food is amazing, and it’s way too affordable!”

He gave a kind smile and said something that really stayed with me:

“That’s what we are known for. We serve many labourers every day… they are our regular customers. We can’t do that to them. We like it this way.”

Then he thanked me and handed me a handful of toffees with a warm smile.

How sweet and thoughtful is that?

A place isn’t made just of walls, recipes, or names. It’s made of people and the love they pour into what they do. It’s built by kindness, humility, and the quiet service to one another.

Alappuzha felt like that, a town where hearts beat slower, smiles come easier, and stories like this stay with you long after you have left.

(I don’t have too many pictures, but I’m glad I managed to capture a few… just enough to remember the warmth, the food, and the wall full of stories).
